Discover Temple, PA
Temple is located in Berks County, PA, in the Reading metro area, about five miles north of the city center. It is within easy reach of Allentown, Harrisburg, Hershey, King of Prussia, Lancaster, and West Chester.
In 1753, a road was laid out from Easton to Reading that became known as “The Great or High Road,” or Easton Road. The 28-mile stretch between Allentown and Reading was later renamed US Route 222. With lots of new travelers on the new road, inns and taverns sprang up every few miles to provide rest and food.
The innkeepers catered to all kinds of folk and used signboards to help potential customers, some of whom were illiterate, understand the name of an inn through a picture. One such signboard was on a circa 1795 log-and-stone tavern called Solomon’s Temple (later the Temple Hotel). The innkeeper’s name was Solomon, and the large, colorful sign outside depicted King Solomon. It was so popular that the community became known as Temple.
Temple is set among beautiful wooded rolling hills and valleys with breathtaking views of the countryside. The scenic town is a deer hunter’s paradise. Some areas are zoned for horses, with rideable trails and parks nearby.
Temple is served by the Muhlenberg School District, which operates Muhlenberg Elementary Center (K-4), C.E. Cole Intermediate School (5-6), Muhlenberg Middle School (7-9), and Muhlenberg High School (10-12).
