About Spring Township, PA
During the 19th century, Cumru Township was the largest township by area in Berks County, PA, and had the biggest population. In 1850, it was divided, and its western section became a new township called “Spring.”
The name comes from a large freshwater spring that periodically appeared and disappeared as a result of limestone fissures. Early settlers called it the “Sinking Spring.”
Today, Spring Township encompasses the communities of West Lawn and West Wyomissing, and is bordered by the boroughs of Adamstown, Sinking Spring and Wyomissing, as well as Bern Township, Brecknock Township (Berks County), Brecknock Township (Lancaster County), Cumru Township, East Cocalico Township (Lancaster County), Lower Heidelberg Township, and South Heidelberg Township.
With beautiful creeks and wooded mountains surrounding Spring Township, there are a wide variety of homes here for every type of buyer and in all price points, whether you are upsizing, downsizing, or purchasing your very first home.
Wilson School District, which serves the communities of Spring, West Lawn, Sinking Spring, Lower Heidelberg, and Wyomissing, consists of eight elementary schools, two junior high schools, one senior high school, and is among the top-ranked school districts in Pennsylvania. The township is also home to Penn State Berks, which offers four-year and associate college degrees as well as certificate programs.
Sinking Spring also hosts the annual Apple Dumpling Festival, a celebration of the nation’s second most valuable fruit crop, with homemade apple dumplings, entertainment, amusement rides, craft show, pie eating and watermelon seed spitting contests, pageants and more.
