About Shillington, PA
The borough of Shillington is just two miles southwest of Reading, PA and about 49 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Wyomissing Creek, a tributary of the Schuylkill River, runs along its western border, and the borough is largely surrounded by Cumru Township.
In fact, Shillington was part of Cumru Township when, in 1860, local landowner Samuel Shilling sold some of his property for residences. It would become a separate municipality from Cumru Township in 1908.
In 1824, much of the land was occupied by Angelica Farm, a poorhouse.
Shillington may be best known for being the historical home of Thomas Mifflin, the first governor of Pennsylvania and 11th President of the Continental Congress. He stayed in his country manor, known as Angelica Farm, where he entertained the Who’s Who of 18th century America.
The manor was demolished when the Berks County Poor House, which operated from 1825 to 1952, was built on the land. American novelist John Updike, who grew up in Shillington, would set his first novel in a fictional building based on this poorhouse. Today, much of the land is now occupied by the Governor Mifflin School District.
