Pottstown is a borough in Montgomery County, PA, and is located on the Schuylkill River about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia and 20 miles southeast of Reading.
The land was originally deeded by William Penn in 1701 and first settled by Germans, Swedes and English. The first iron forge was built in in 1714 and the village quickly became recognized for its growing metal industries.
The village was originally called Pottsgrove in honor of its founder, John Potts. The name was changed to Pottstown when the borough was incorporated in 1815.
Today, Pottstown is the center of a productive farming and dairy region. It lies along the Schuylkill River Heritage Corridor, which features 128 miles of historical attractions and community events.
It is also about 15 minutes from shopping at the huge Philadelphia Premium Outlets mall in Limerick, and 20 minutes from Valley Forge State Forest in Elverson, where visitors enjoy fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The Pottstown School District serves the borough and is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The West Campus of Montgomery County Community College is also located in Pottstown, offering high quality educational opportunities for community residents.
Pottstown is also an excellent location for commuters. U.S. Route 422 passes to the south of Pottstown and heads east to King of Prussia and Philadelphia and west to Reading. PA Route 100 runs north-south through the area, heading south to West Chester and north to Allentown.
