Originally called Manavon after its settlement in 1732, the borough was incorporated in 1849 and adopted the name Phoenixville for the town’s largest employer, the Phoenix Iron Company, which manufactured nails, rails, structural steel and weapons during the 19th century and early 20th century, including cannons for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
