About the Borough of Mount Penn
The Borough of Mount Penn is located in the Antietam Valley in central Berks County and is bordered on its western side by the city of Reading. It is within easy reach of Allentown, Harrisburg, Hershey, King of Prussia, Lancaster, and West Chester.
Mount Penn and neighboring Lower Alsace Township are served by the Antietam School District, which operates three schools: Antietam Middle/Sr High School (7th–12th), Mount Penn Elementary (2nd–6th) and Mount Penn Primary (K-1st).
In terms of college-level opportunities, some of Pennsylvania’s top-rated school districts serve Berks County, including Penn State Berks (a commonwealth campus of Penn State University), Albright College, Alvernia University, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and Reading Area Community College.
At the top of Mount Penn, you’ll find the famous 7-stories-tall red Pagoda, one of Reading’s most popular attractions and the perfect spot to catch unforgettable views of the city and surrounding valley. The landmark was built in 1906 by William A. Witman, Sr., who originally planned to turn it into a resort. You can also view the famous Japanese temple bell Witman bought in 1907 and had shipped to him via the Suez Canal.
For some great food, try the Knight’s Pub at Stokesay Castle, which was inspired by a 13th century English castle of the same name and was once the vacation home of the Hiester family. Joseph Hiester was born in Berks County in 1752, was elected governor of Pennsylvania in 1820, and was regarded as the richest man in Berks County.
Of course, if you’re looking for art, museums, Broadway shows, world-class symphony, outdoor recreation like hiking and mountain biking, auto racing events, baseball or even bargain outlet shopping, Reading has it all.
