Discover Kenhorst, PA
The Borough of Kenhorst is located in central Berks County. It is bordered on the north and east by the city of Reading and on the south and west by Cumru Township. It is about one hour by car from Harrisburg and Allentown and 1.5 hours from Philadelphia.
Originally part of Cumru Township, a complaint about inadequate streetlights gave birth to the Borough of Kenhorst. Township supervisors had installed better streetlights and imposed a special tax for power and maintenance. The residents thought the tax was exorbitant and refused to pay. Since no money was forthcoming, the electric company turned off the lights.
This compelled some communities in the Township to form the Borough. It was named by combining “Ken” for a large farm in the area operated by the Kendall family and “Horst” for a large estate owned by the Horst family. Kenhorst was incorporated in 1931.
Today, Kenhorst is a residential community with a population of about 2,900 residents. It’s home to many charming traditional brick homes built in the 1920s and 1930s.
Governor Mifflin School District
The Borough of Kenhorst is served by the award-winning Governor Mifflin School District, which operates three elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and one senior high school.
The district’s notable graduates include an Olympic medalist, a brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps, a Pulitzer-prize-winning author (Updike), a nationally known television news anchor, and a cardiovascular surgeon on the cutting-edge of medical research.
