About Exton and the Surrounding Area
Exton, in West Whiteland Township in the center of Chester County, is part of the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area. It is located where U.S. Route 202, U.S. Route 30, and PA 100 converge, connecting traffic from Philadelphia, Lancaster and Wilmington.
Some say Exton may have been named as the “X” denoting this map intersection, but it’s more likely the village was named for one of several Extons in England.
The area was first settled in the early 18th century by Welsh Quakers. The historic Evan Lewis House in Exton, built about 1717, is one of the last surviving structures from the period and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remained in the hands of the Lewis family for six generations (until 1840).
