Elverson is very near Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, America’s best-preserved example of an 18th century iron plantation. It was built in 1771 to produce iron for Revolutionary War cannons, cannonballs, shot, and shell, to replace iron that had previously been imported from England.
The Furnace supplied artillery and ammunition for George Washington’s army, and at one time his forces came within three miles of Hopewell. It also produced iron during the mid-1800s for Civil War weapons. There are 42 restored structures to see, and the site hosts special reenactment events.
Elverson is also about 13 miles from historic Yellow Springs, which was a fashionable spa town for Colonial visitors who sought the restorative power of its natural mineral waters. George Washington commissioned the first Revolutionary War hospital to be built in the village. It was the first military hospital in the nation’s history and served many victims of the brutal Valley Forge winter of 1777-78.
