Discover Downingtown, PA
The Downingtown area, 33 miles west of Philadelphia, was settled by English and European colonists in the early 1700s. It was originally named Milltown for its many mills on the east side of the Brandywine Creek.
In 1761, John Downing opened a tavern called the Downing Mill Inn in Milltown, and his father developed mills. The village began to be called Downing’s Town by the time of the American Revolution and, after the War of 1812, was changed to Downingtown. Stage coach service and later railroads, eventually brought prosperity to Downingtown, thanks in part to its central location.
Residents and visitors appreciate the town’s rich history. Downingtown’s East Lancaster Avenue Historic District was placed on the national Register of Historic Places in 1979, and there are 20 historic structures within the district.
Something else to appreciate is Downingtown’s access to acres and acres of parks, nature areas and walking trails. Nearby is the 1,727-acre Marsh Creek State Park and the 535-acre Marsh Creek Lake, a wonderful resource for fishing, sailing, and migrating waterfowl.
The scenic Struble Trail follows the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek as it flows towards Downingtown and is great for riding bicycles, running, hiking and walking. The trail network at Harmony Hill Nature Area is a beautiful area for mountain biking. And Dowlin Forge Park is a beautiful hike, ride, run along the Brandywine Creek at any time of year.
Downingtown is served by Downingtown Area School District, which operates 10 elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools and is the largest school district in Chester County. DHS East and DHS West have been named two of the top high schools in Pennsylvania.
