About Birdsboro, PA
Birdsboro was named for ironmaker William Bird, who established a forge in the area about 1740, which was followed by other forges along Six Penny Creek, as well as a sawmill and a gristmill.
Birdsboro was also home to the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone. By the time Berks County was formed in 1762, it had already become a sizeable town and, today, is one of the largest boroughs in the county.
The borough is about 8 miles southeast of Reading, PA, along the Schuylkill River. It is also situated on the northern edge of the 73,000-acre Hopewell Big Woods, the largest area of contiguous forest in southeastern Pennsylvania, which features hiking, fishing, hunting and many other outdoor activities.
Within Hopewell Big Woods is French Creek State Park, home to the warm-water Hopewell Lake and the cold-water Scotts Run Lake (where the state record smallmouth bass was caught).
The Park surrounds the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, a restored rural “iron plantation” that was the largest domestic producer of iron at the time of the American Revolution and again during the American Civil War (and founded by the Bird family).
PA-724, which is also Birdsboro’s Main Street, provides easy access west to Shillington and east to Pottstown. USS-422 provides for convenient commutes to Reading (20 minutes) and King of Prussia (40 minutes).
Daniel Boone Area School District
Birdsboro lies in the Daniel Boone Area School District, which operates three elementary schools in the area, Daniel Boone Middle School in nearby Amity Township, and Daniel Boone Area High School in Birdsboro.
