Alleghenyville and the Surrounding Area
The village of Alleghenyville is located in Berks County near the Lancaster County line. Situated in Brecknock Township, in the rolling hills of the Allegheny Valley, Alleghenyville residents enjoy easy freeway access to Reading, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Philadelphia.
Brecknock Township was primarily settled by German and Swiss immigrants, but is thought to have been named in 1741 by Thomas Edwards, a Welsh immigrant, after a village by the same name in his homeland.
Evidence of the Pennsylvania German settlers can still be seen today in the Alleghany Mennonite Meetinghouse, built in 1855 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Alleghany Mennonite Cemetery (also known as the Bauman/Eshleman Cemetery) across the road, where the first burial took place in 1754. The Meetinghouse is one of the oldest surviving, least altered and originally furnished Mennonite meetinghouses in the nation.
If you have children, you will be pleased to know that Alleghenyville is located within the award-winning Governor Mifflin School District, which operates three elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and one senior high school.
Within 10 miles of the village, you will also find Alvernia University, Reading Area Community College, Pennsylvania State University-Penn State Berks, and Albright College.
